eNPS Formula

eNPS = (% Promoters - % Detractors)

Score ranges from -100 (all detractors) to +100 (all promoters)

What Is eNPS?

Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) is one of the most widely used metrics for measuring employee loyalty and engagement. It is adapted from the traditional Net Promoter Score (NPS) used in customer satisfaction, but applied internally to gauge how employees feel about their workplace. The core question is simple: “On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely are you to recommend this company as a place to work?”

Based on their response, employees are classified into three groups. Promoters (9-10) are your most engaged and loyal employees who actively champion your workplace. Passives (7-8) are generally satisfied but not enthusiastic -- they are vulnerable to competitive offers. Detractors (0-6) are unhappy employees who may be actively disengaged and could negatively influence others.

The beauty of eNPS lies in its simplicity. A single question, consistently measured over time, gives you a reliable pulse on organizational health. While it should not be your only engagement metric, it serves as an excellent top-level indicator that can be tracked at high frequency without causing survey fatigue.

How to Calculate eNPS

The eNPS calculation is straightforward. After collecting your survey responses, categorize each respondent as a Promoter, Passive, or Detractor based on their score. Then apply the formula:

eNPS = (Number of Promoters - Number of Detractors) / Total Responses x 100

Note that Passives are included in the total response count but do not directly factor into the score. This is intentional -- the score measures the gap between your most and least engaged employees. The resulting score ranges from -100 (every respondent is a detractor) to +100 (every respondent is a promoter).

eNPS Score Ranges

Below -10: Critical

Urgent action needed. Significant employee dissatisfaction and high turnover risk.

-10 to 0: Concerning

Significant room for improvement. More detractors than promoters.

0 to 20: Good

Positive territory with room for growth. More promoters than detractors.

20 to 50: Great

Above average engagement. Strong employee loyalty and satisfaction.

50+: Excellent

World-class engagement. Among the top employers globally.

Best Practices for Running an eNPS Survey

  1. Guarantee anonymity. Employees must trust that their responses cannot be traced back to them. Anonymous surveys yield more honest results and higher participation rates. Clearly communicate your anonymity protections before each survey.
  2. Measure consistently and frequently. Quarterly surveys are the gold standard for eNPS. Monthly pulse surveys work for fast-moving organizations. The key is consistency -- run the survey at the same cadence so you can identify meaningful trends rather than noise.
  3. Follow up with action. The fastest way to destroy an eNPS program is to collect feedback and do nothing with it. Share results transparently with your team, identify the top two or three areas for improvement, and create visible action plans. Employees who see their feedback driving change become promoters.
  4. Include a follow-up question. While the core eNPS question is powerful, adding one open-ended follow-up like “What is the primary reason for your score?” gives you qualitative context that makes the quantitative score actionable.
