What is Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS)?

A single-question metric that measures how likely employees are to recommend their organization as a place to work, scored from -100 to +100.

Definition

Employee Net Promoter Score, or eNPS, adapts the well-known customer NPS methodology to measure employee loyalty and advocacy. The survey asks one core question: "On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely are you to recommend this company as a place to work?" Respondents are classified into three groups: Promoters (9-10) who are enthusiastic advocates, Passives (7-8) who are satisfied but not motivated to recommend, and Detractors (0-6) who may actively discourage others from joining.

The eNPS is calculated by subtracting the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters, yielding a score between -100 and +100. A positive score means more advocates than critics. Most organizations consider a score above +10 acceptable and above +40 excellent, though benchmarks vary by industry and region.

eNPS is valued for its simplicity and ease of administration. It can be deployed in pulse surveys, onboarding check-ins, or exit processes with minimal survey fatigue. However, because it condenses complex sentiment into a single number, it works best when paired with open-ended follow-up questions or more comprehensive engagement surveys that reveal the drivers behind the score.

Why It Matters

eNPS provides a fast, repeatable pulse on employee loyalty that can be tracked over time and compared across teams. Because it mirrors the customer NPS that executives already understand, it gives HR leaders a common language with the C-suite. Declining eNPS often serves as an early warning system for turnover spikes, disengagement, or cultural problems — giving organizations time to intervene before issues escalate.

How to Measure

Deploy the standard eNPS question on a monthly or quarterly cadence. Calculate: (% Promoters) minus (% Detractors). Supplement with one or two open-ended questions such as "What is the primary reason for your score?" to capture actionable context. Track trends over time and segment by department, location, and tenure.
